I have an Apple iPhone 3G (3.0) – Is it safe for me to downlaod free applications in the Apple iPhone App store?

When I began what I asked for username and password and then I registered and have entered and was able to download a free "Fandango." Only I want to know if you can lock the phone or, if it is safe?
