How do I get an iPod engraved when bought in a store, not online?

I bought a 30GB video iPod for my boyfriend a gift graduation, but I'm there at the Apple store, not online. I want to record is less likely to be stolen college next year for him. I called Apple's store after purchase, but said that iPods can be laser engraved bc it will damage the iPod. ideas or help?!?
