Connecting iPod touch to the Internet?

I just bought an iPod Touch and want to connect to the Internet through wi-fi. I have wireless router at home, but what are the steps you must follow in order to use the Internet from your device? I would like to see in the book of instructions, but for some reason, Apple no offers and no phone number to call to the UK for technical advice on how to do things you want to do, does anyone have a number I can call to ask for help or someone has had similar problems that can guide me through this. Besides, how can change the router password if you have wrong and that everything was done, which affects in any hurry to get on the Internet. Simple answers please, it's an adult to learn about it.

Settings> Wi-Fi should read if the wi fi does not light and I must say that choosing a network and the network will be there click it, put a WEP key if you have locked the phone, if not press and attached
