iTunes iPhone … …. new portable disk format iTunes backup and …?

I formatted my laptop, but before I do, I you back up all my files using the iTunes backup feature built into iTunes 8. I have 541 songs on a DVD now, but I can not go back to iTunes on my "New" machine format. The instructions say to open iTunes and pop the disk and iTunes asks you to restore back to its state at the "old" system. However there is no system. I tried to manually copy the DVD files to your computer (where you can manually add files to iTunes), but seems to have lost on DVD and that stop after about 40-50 songs and just hums and then gives me a cyclic error! Can anyone help?! I do not want to lose all these files!
