My friend wants to sell its 3G Iphone 16 GB. I have an 8GB first generation of TMobile. I can do the same with 3G?

I have found conflicting results Online. iPhone development team said the blog that I can not, but I think it is only if I have 2.2, which is not present 3G. I'm confused. "I can shoot this thing in my plan T-Mobile or should stick to the first generation? BTW: I could use additional 3G space, which is why I am considering the purchase. If I could get a first Refurb generation I can buy one more, but those that are rare or concerns at this time.
