What is the best place to buy an iPhone 3G in the UK, and is useful?

It's my birthday tomorrow, and my mother bought me a new phone. I want an iPhone, but I wondered if it really worth it. I have an iPod and Internet access at home, etc. I'm not exactly a great start or something, either. If I understand it, is the £ 30 something about 24 months when the phone free. I just want some opinions from people who already have one. It is cheaper to buy only the iPhone, or make a contract? I've always been in the pay-as-you-go phones.
