mother who is the best? ATT or Verizon?

I just bought shares of AT & T. I looked at their financial statements, balance sheets, etc, and all are looks good to me. In addition, you can not beat their dividends. One of my friends told me today, I would have gone with Verizon. I thought them, but both had the same appearance to me, if every one has an advantage over the other. Apple iPhone contract with ATT until 2012 compared to future network G4 and Verizon FiOS. My goal is not profit in the short term is for the long-term growth and income.
