What is GPS?

I saw a GPS module for the iPod touch and iPhone, and I wondered what it is, and what it does. Am I allowed to use GPS is connected to the Internet via WiFi or 3G?

GPS modules allow the camera to use the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). generation iPhone First (also known as the iPhone 2G) is not coming with GPS transceivers. because the maps are updated via the Internet, you must be online to use (either via WiFi or mobile network). And more new iPhone 3G not need this module, as already equipped with more sophisticated "assisted" GPS chip.
