iPhone 3G will be the year of the GPS and compass, without any AT & T plan?

I want to buy an iPhone because I want music implementation and capacity, but the reason for not receiving the iPod Touch is that I want the GPS and compass skills. The issue is the compass and the GPS works with an iPhone 3G does not have a plan from AT & T. I know the GPS and compass built into the iPhone 3G I know if you need a data plan to use or something.
