Insurance SquareTrade iPhone … is reliable?

In my last vacation, I left my iPhone 3G 16GB in a restaurant and went through hell trying to achieve, and go home without iPhone. I was thinking of buying an iPhone 3G 16GB refurbished AT & T, as even sell the old 3G 16GB more. It is very cheap and I willing to do, because the phone is working properly and a lot of comments on them appear to be good. However, the only way I will invest a hundred or two dollars on an iPhone, I need to provide assurances in this regard. Do not even mention AppleCare. Has anyone used the insurance for a SquareTrade iPhone? Is it real, not just a scam? You got the money for it, if it broke? Could give new iPhone? I learned that State Farm offers insurance policy for the iPhone. In the state farm in general is a tool quite reliable. I SquareTrade not heard before and have no specific experience with them.
