Can someone explain the iPhone 3G headphones?

Ok, so I had the original iPhone and had problems with the headphone jack. Headphones original iPhone worked perfectly, but when I tried to connect the input of my car stereo I had to get an AUX adapter 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm. I have one, worked for a week, then began to crack and died. Do you have a second, even what happened.
