What are the advantages of a jailbroken iPhone?

When I upgraded my iPhone to 2.1 I used Pwnage to Jailbreak and unlock the iPhone (First generation) I've never used cydia or installer. I upgraded to Version 2.2 M / W, and today my phone is locked, but I'm still not sure if I have to run again for the jailbreak Pwnage. What are the advantages of having a jailbroken iPhone, compared to just open? Thanks in advance!
