How to switch the 3G iPhone set to silent or vibrate mode?

There is a separate switch on the top left as shown in the manual. plz help.

The switch on the side of the iPhone 3G is silent ring mode. If set to vibrate, vibrate can be disabled by going to Settings-> Sound. Silent Era -> Vibrator (on / off) and the ring -> Vibrator (on / off) game modes
