Ipod Touch 16 GB

A year ago I bought the iPod Touch 16 GB of origin. At that time, I found that, although it has some flaws, most of all packages in fact, one of the best iPods available. Now, a year later, Apple launched the next generation Touch. Now I've had for a few days and this is what I found: the second generation iPod Touch 16 GB is an improvement over the first generation, and gets even closer to perfection. In this spirit, this review shows a large a small number of defects. It can also be difficult to justify the upgrade of the first to second generation unless you simply must have a the few hardware improvements, and can live with the fact that you may have to buy some accessories.

Ipod Touch 16GB – Size and dimensions
16GB iPod Touch now has a more rounded design on the back, making it look slightly thinner and more like the original iPhone did (this is not really thinner than its predecessor, just seems that way). Unfortunately, the stainless steel backplate also attracts fingerprints and scratches plateau almost magically. After a year of almost constant use the backplate of my generation First Touch looks a bit like a wild animal Etch-a-Sketch (I carry the Touch in my pocket). Interestingly, the glass on the front appears (after a year of heavy use) is quite resistant to scratches.

He is back (Which also provides custom engraving) that quickly becomes blurred. I would have preferred a brushed metal / aluminum backplate. I had to search, but the new 16GB iPod Touch is a little lighter (a few grams) – but seems thinner (thanks to the beveled edge design.) The rounded edges to fit palm my hand a little better, so it feels good (to be honest, the original Touch was already very, very good in this regard). With the exception of outside dimensions exactly match with the original Touch. The most visible change ahead is that the steel plate behind the glass frame a bit like the original iPhone.

Ipod Touch 16 GB – touch screen controls
The screen is simply gorgeous. Is bright, lively, has great contrast, and you can adjust the brightness of ambient light. In full sun, like its predecessor, it is difficult to read properly. In the shade it's perfectly readable – a feat considering how bright a screen should be achieved. The color temperature of screen slightly shifted down (or at least pompuous: screen colors have changed slightly from a bluish tint of gold, something they do not realize unless you have the two units side by side).

The touchscreen is very sensitive, and as I said before, totally resistant to scratches. Surviving a full year into his pocket and metal objects such as a password is evidence of sustainability (looking at the stainles steel back is a constant reminder how bad it could have been eliminated). As with the original key, the same problems occur when trying to control the device 'blind' (ie when is in your pocket): without looking, you can not. Fortunately, Apple has addressed the biggest problem with this concept: a volume control equipment. resolution of screen is 480×320, which is very good (and certainly better than my iPod Classic). Interestingly, I found that ripping videos to this resolution is not necessarily worked much better than that of (320×240) Classic iPod screen, then remove this resolution, memory retention.

iPod / iTunes
After a year of having an original touch, I remember that this device is the source of an iPod – or rather a digital music player. As it turns that, despite also using it to play music, this feature is increasingly relegated to a background task – a task, nontheless, handles very well. The cover flow navigation and display functionality has evolved much of the original (1.0 and 2.0) versions, and are still the best on the market. Improvements the interface support nice touches such as showing lyrics of a song on the keyboard, place the cue volume controls / double-click the home button, a slide rule Alphabetical when browsing titles, etc.

It still lacks a search function, however. And, especially in view of the visualization capabilities excellent and also the recent addition of a new viewer (in addition to those already on iTunes), I would have liked to see a display on the Touch too. The most large (and I voluntarily (as in bad)) default is: you can not activate the "hard drive", ie use of touch as a storage device mass. The biggest advantage is better battery life.

The video is crisp (still no contrast control, yes), and reproduction Audio is just as expected (again: I'm not audiophile. I am absolutely happy with strong audio capabilities). Again I am not using the Apple supplied headphones and normal white all. I use the purchased separately. New iPod Touch 16GB or a second generation is a speaker. The audio quality here is not really terrible, but close. The sound is metallic, weak, and just somehow comes iPod (mono, of course). I think most of the speaker has a specific reason different High Fidelity: make games on the iPod Touch 16 Go without headphones so much more enjoyable. But for music I prefer headphones or active speakers. To be honest, I prefer not to hear the music of this forum.

iTunes integration is great as before. A kind of error correction has been backed up data much faster, and both iTunes and the Touch Generation 2 now sports a new type of smart playlist called "genius." At first, I was not impressed by this feature. Although iTunes 8 has had this feature primarily seen as a well-executed new song to sell and do not use it. In my 16 GB iPod Touch, however (which is only a part of my library due to memory limitations), this feature literally rocks. The first day alone, had re-discover five songs I did not know I had (much less liked).

In contrast, the Touch is not yet compatible with the groups list reproduction, which is a constant annoyance for me. I am also disappointed that the Touch still can not synchronize wireless, it can be used to access shared playlists (other than downloading them, of course). An application on the App Store offers this feature, but only for non-DRM'd titles, proving the point that it is possible.

Images (from iPhoto) can also be synchronized with the iPod Touch, and there's nothing more fun that shows the capabilities of your iPod with a beautiful picture and a pinch "and" drag. "Interestingly (or rather: unfortunately), iTunes appears at the bottom of the image display large with a low resolution, probably to save memory. This may make sense, but I would like to have more control over this function (eg me to decide which is the resolution of the image of the iPod should be).

Ipod Touch 16GB – Accessories, Big Bad Ugly
Unfortunately, Apple changed the pinout (* new) * connector for the iPod. Consequently, some "Made for iPod 'accessories either do not work, or not fully functional more. For example, my Altec Lansing active can not load the iPod Touch, no more (he has been able to charge the Touch first generation). It's very, very annoying to not know whether your iPod works with its "Made for iPod 'devices more, and shop new accessories a game of chance. My car integration (horribly expensive) iPod, which fortunately continues to operate (including recharge). However, the iPod connector compatibility (or lack thereof) has become a big mess. Imagine you want to buy an accessory for your child or friend, and too late that it does not.

Touch 16GB – WiFi / Internet
A year ago I bought a 16GB iPod Touch, but I have a website fully integrated accessory kit. In fact, the addition of WiFi and full Internet access is a feature of the murderer to me. The browser web (a mobile version Safari) is very capable. Much has been said about the fact that Mobile Safari does not support Flash. This is annoying if you visit sites that use it. Tweaks drag interface based on the movement works so well that I regularly use the iPod Touch 16 GB for normal network browsing. General experience has increased in recent months, probably not a little by the fact that many sites have beed re-designed with the iPhone in mind. Since the Touch's browser is exactly the same, it inherits the benefit.

speed WiFi is good (but still uses the 802.11b / G, not the variant n) – and it all depends on the access point is connected. Remember the hot spots has been connected to (A bit like a laptop would), and can also connect using WPA. There are other Web enabled applications that come with the iPod (Maps, which can signal its location by the position of the nearest access points), Stocks, YouTube, and climate, they are nice, but remarkable. WiFi reception range is average, but certainly less than some laptops.

Then the 16GB iPod Touch also comes with Mail, Address Book and Boock, and become murderers fieatures, especially when associated with an Exchange server or (as Apple would prefer) MobileMe. Mail supports "push" technology, which means that (almost) as soon there is a matching entry (and your touch is connected to an access point), is warned by a discreep short beep. Read email, including mails with rich content works very well. Compose other than e-mails short, however, is annoying to the brink of discomfort due to the small virtual keyboard). However, the mere fact of being able to do that makes all the difference. Updates to the agenda have saved my skin a couple of times already, you do not have to remember to sync your iPod active after making a change in the calendar.

Integration with Exchange (to the point of writing) is still a bit irregular, with no messages appearing for s few hours and then all of a sudden are things at once (which was initially suspected a configuration issue on the Exchange server, but there seems to be the case). Depending on how you configure MobileMe on your Mac, the results are similar to what you can expect to change (with the difference Of course, Apple is running the server you). Unfortunately, Mobile Me not currently synchronize your notes.

Very well done is the integration with iTunes Store. So maybe just a mechanism for generate sales, I just love the fact that I remember having heard or a song, I can almost always instantly purchase and have on my iPod Touch 16 GB in a matter of seconds. Songs purchased on the Touch synchronize the main iTunes library (in a rather silly 'Purchased on Touch Playlist "). If a download end because the network connection is lost (or not), which will continue once the Internet connection is restored.

Interestingly, contact sports (I a sucker for lame puns) the equipment necessary to connect to iPod "Nike + sports included accessories (not to connect the dongle). What I say is interesting, because these devices utilize the bluetooth frequency band, but the 16GB iPod Touch is not compatible with Bluetooth devices (headsets, microphones, integration car and printers come to mind). Since I use a redesign of the original work, this is not essential for me.

Ipod Touch 16 GB – Applications / App Store
If Mail, Calendar and Browser are killer apps, Apple has added another feature of the murderer to touch (and iPhone) that expands the functionality of the device (and customization) by orders of magnitude: the App Store. Outwardly similar to the iTunes Store, here you can choose from hundreds of applications (Very high quality variable, however), buy them and install them on the spot. Prices range from free to about $ 10 (there is a little more expensive titles, but most are sold to a pair USD). Applications are made in three different ways ('views', 'top', browse by category), plus You can search by keywords.

Although the "signal to noise ratio is not very good (there are a lot of useless or awfully executed applications), There are some applications of the jaw droppingly good that further improvements Touch. Among the first to talk about Apple own (free) "Remote application that allows control iTunes Remote on your Mac or Apple TV – with full visual feedback in real time, and full search capability (allegedly, it is also an advantage for users Apple TV, offering a virtual keyboard as a gateway. Not having Apple TV, I can not comment.) Then there is an application that lets you play your music whole (Well, at least check out) to your touch – via the Internet wherever you are (interestingly, this software was not produced by Apple).

Improving notably the iPod Touch's usability are eBook readers (the 16GB iPod Touch and other Rading model is almost perfect for books, what that "feeling Star Trek 'info pad) and offline news readers. Another important category are applications that allow to easily transfer (and view) File Mac / PC to the iPod Touch 16 GB. I would wait for Apple to integrate this functionality into iTunes (media may be rudimentary PDF), but Other manufacturers are more than happy to fill the gap for you. And for those geeks are VNC and SSH clients that finally allow them to control their server cluster using an iPod.

For those who want radio, there are many offerings for IP radios. Course means that the iPod must remain within range of a point access to use this feature. Mine is, too, now the radio – and rediscover a little why I never missed. I'm just not a man of radio, I guess. I know that many people missed, and you want that Apple had been the last mile and also adds an FM tuner.

Two applications I am sure it is early in the App Store due to another more for 16 GB iPod Touch: compatible with external microphones. Hi-end earphones have both an Apple remote control microphone and is said to be compatible with the second (and only 2nd) 16 GB iPod Touch gen. Portable audio and VoIP applications (Skype) that allows phone functionality over WiFi are sure not to follow soon (note: I saw these applications available in stores in the United States, but unfortunately not yet available in Switzerland, also interpret documents that the second generation Apple iPod Touch 16 GB and another model supports external microphones, as they have not given terminal Mic / Remote headphones for me).

And then there are the games. They are currently the largest category of all applications. IPod Touch 16 GB, with its accelerometer, 480×320 color screen and touch interface allows a gaming device of Nice, and developers have to have fun really innovative game ("Toy Bot 'may serve as a good example.) Apple may be aware that this is an increasingly important aspect for the iPod Touch 16GB: Gen 2 sports a speaker device that makes little sense – except to improve the gaming experience (believe me: playing an accelerometer-based game with headphones on can be fun little when it is fascinating). And improving the experience that makes. IPod Touch 16GB is unsuitable for the keyboard control 'classic' based games (for eg Tetris, Pac Man), and most of the settings IPod Touch 16GB suffer. Other games, however, to adapt perfectly to the touch input accelerometer / (Monkey Ball, Crash Cart etc), or a natural fit (Labyrinth, Sudoku, Solitair, Othello)

Super-geeks can also download the iPhone / Touch SDK and create their own applications. Not for the faint of heart, you must first download a few gigabytes (Apple Xcode development environment), and the code in Objective-C (an extension Standard C) and use Cocoa framework. In addition, you need a Mac to do so. The atmosphere is really good, and includes an iPhone simulator to test the software before implementation.

I should mention that most improvements (with the exception of the updating of equipment: the microphone stand, stand Nike, volume buttons and battery) can be spared in the first generation Touch (if you have the 2.0 update), or a couple of dollars if you have not updated. In Unless you (like me) want the larger memory (my generation has only 16 GB), the decision to raise the second generation can be difficult.

IPod Touch 16 GB in the summary:
The second-generation 16GB iPod Touch is an almost perfect device. It combines high quality video and audio, user interface, world-class casual game Grand hundreds of applications, and Internet access in one beautiful package. To sum up perfectly: Intocable. Well – almost. He has a big flaw if you invested in accessories: it may be compatible with them, as Apple has changed the iPod connector pin-out (again). With these reservations, I recommend the Touch to anyone. Also great: owners of 1st generation iPod Touch can get most of these goodies with a simple update low-cost software.
