iPhone 3GS battery life extremely short?

I have updated my iPhone to the most recent firmware (3.1.3), then downloaded some games and apps from the iTunes store (Google earth and Skype).
I have charged my iPhone in the morning, I didn’t browse the internet, only made like 2 calls today, came home and the battery is at 60%. It used to be at around 80%, even when I browsed the internet and made way more calls.

mostly this problems exists because of hardware failures…try switching off all battery consuming applications like wifi,BT, etc…swich off battery percentage indigator and decrease display brightness also…

if still not worked out go to authorised servicecentres for a replacement.
