Question about iPhone Jailbreak?

I searched the Internet and what I've found you can use a program like Cydia to jailbreak your iPhone, so not have to buy for applications, etc. Is this possible or is it just rumors? So if someone Jailbreaked your iPhone, would they be able to restore your factory if they wanted? iPhone or if they mess up. Please someone explain, thanks.

There are security risks for jailbreaking an iPhone. Although it is possible, is illegal. When running a program like Cydia is outside the Apple security protection. So the iPhone is vulnerable to the risks of implementation malware that can do all sorts of unpleasant things even make phone calls.
