I have to update the iPhone 3G? ?

Hello, I have the iPhone 3G. I've been in Australia on prepaid, so no need to worry about the plans of age. I thought about going on a 12 months or 24 months with Optus, but I know that a new iPhone next year. We are almost in November if an update is not so far, right? can someone please tell me if I have to wait until then or if I'll have 3G now? features predicted in the iPhone 4G that good? What are they? What could improve the apple would not move to a software update? My current iPhone is dying a slow death. the seams to get slower I'm running out of space on my phone (which I will be 32 GB) and is a large crack in the bottom of my phone, now that increased the seams ..
